I went to the Lake District on 16th to 18th October with the UoN mountaineers. On the Saturday I led a walk near Buttermere with a group of new members and on the Sunday went for a scramble up Sour Milk Gill and then up Great Gable.
This was a popular trip and the cottage we stayed in was full, for the activities we split into smaller groups.
On Saturday I led a group of six on a walk near Buttermere. Starting from just outside Buttermere village and we then proceeded along the northern edge of Buttermere, following the path to Red Pike and then along the ridge line to Fleetwith Pike. Here we descended and walked back along the path adjacent to the western shore of Buttermere. The weather was good and almost the entire route was on a well-built path. The walk took 6 hrs 30 mins, covered 15.53 km and height gain of 1,240 metres.
The next day I joined another group in going up Sour Milk Gill scramble and then Base Brown, Green Gable and finally Great Gable. The group split at Green Gable with some missing Great Gable and descending to Styhead Tarn, I decided to quickly walk up to Great Gable and try to catch the rest on the descent. I was able to catch them but only at the end near Seathwaite farm. The walk and scramble took 5 hrs 8 mins, with a length of 9.36 km and 871 m of ascent.
The map below shows both routes.
