Van: The plan

I recently bought a Renault Trafic van (see my Man with Van post) and though I would share an outline of my plan for converting it into a campervan.

These are the initial steps I am currently working on in order:

  1. Removal of old plywood lining
  2. Deep clean
  3. Repaint and repair to any body work or interior damage
  4. Fit insulation
  5. Cut and fit a new plywood lining
  6. Carpet the interior and put vinyl on floor
  7. Install cupboards

After completing the steps above I will be able to use the van as a ‘tent on wheels’ meaning it should be comfortable enough to sleep in. The idea is then after some practical use it will be clearer what features will be most valuable to add.

Instead of using screws to attach the ply sheeting I am going to use bolts as this will allow for easy removal for access to fit electric etc. at a later date.

Potential features to add later, roughly  in order:

  1. Leisure battery
  2. Additional lighting
  3. Solar power system
  4. Windows
  5. Awning for either slide door, rear doors or both
  6. Removal bulkhead
  7. Rock n roll bed
  8. Sink
  9. Cooking hob
  10. Fridge

Items like adding more windows and the removal of the bulkhead is compromise between space and comfort and making a discrete camper van. Items such as fridge are at the bottom of the list as they are relatively  expensive and I am uncertain if I will need one.

One thing I am sure of is I will not be adding lots of accessories such as TV, or big sound system.

The plan is flexible and I will be adding posts on the progress so you will be able to see if I stick to my original plan.
